Nuffield Research Placements Update

Nuffield Research Placements are excellent for making UCAS statements and other apprenticeship and job applications stand out in a crowded field. T

hey provide solid evidence of the ability to succeed at undergraduate level, and of the specific subject knowledge and commitment regarded as a quality standard by employers.

Some of our research project providers each summer are the biggest regional universities, industries, and government research institutes.

What are Nuffield Research Placements?

This highly prestigious programme offers the opportunity for year 12 STEM (science, maths, statistics, engineering, computer science, engineering, economics, geography, geology, psychology) students to engage in research-based work experience during the summer holidays in 2021.

The NRP programme has run across the UK for the last 24 years, and each summer around 1,00 students are successfully placed to work alongside a professional researcher in a university, industry or government organisation.

Students are supported to carry out their own mini research project and to write up a report and design a poster about their findings.

Students are prepared for the experience by preplacement training in professional behaviour while at work, and research and data handling skills.

Placements may be physical – in an office, lab or field based, or may be virtual.

Virtual placements give greater accessibility to the opportunity for students living in isolated rural areas.

Benefits of the programme

  • Students considering a career in STEM can have a taster of it before taking the plunge.

  • Students gain academic and work-based skills which are excellent for putting on any job, apprenticeship or university applications post 18.

  • Students gain confidence in their own abilities. Independent longitudinal research shows that they are motivated by the experience, gain better grades at the end of year 13, and successfully apply for more prestigious opportunities such as Russell group universities.

Eligibility criteria

Placements are open for students who meet the academic eligibility criteria, and who are eligible for a Nuffield bursary or are first in their family to go to university.

Students should check their eligibility here before applying online here.

Applications are open until 31st March 2021

Does it cost anything?

No, these placements are FREE. All students have their travel expenses fully covered for travel to the workplace each day. In addition, eligible students are paid a Nuffield bursary for attendance at the workplace
